The Vietnam War
The Vietnam War was a military conflict fought between North Vietnam, supported by their Communistic allies, and South Vietnam, supported by the United States and other anti-communist allies. The People's Army of Vietnam (P.A.V.N.), funded by the Vietnamese Government and stationed in North Vietnam, fought a conventional-style war with heavy weaponry and large units. Their army included the Navy, Air Force, and Marine Police. The Viet Cong(V.C.), said to be a branch of the P.A.V.N. in North Vietnam, fought more of a guerrilla-style war, ambushing in small troops and using the element of surprise. The V.C. soldiers were actually native to South Vietnam, but they resettled in North Vietnam because of their communistic views. The Army of the Republic of Vietnam(A.R.V.N.), the Southern Vietnamese Army who fought alongside the Americans relied on their dominance in aerial warfare and overbearing weaponry to carry out multiple search and destroy missions, involving both ground forces and air raids. The U.S. played a large role in this devastating war, fighting along side the South Vietnamese Army in order to prevent a communist take-over. It won the 1989 Coretta Scott King award and was ranked number 24 in the American Library Association's list of 100 most frequently challenged books for its use of profanity and realistic depiction of War. It is written from the perspective of 17-year old Richard Perry during his service in the War. He describes the war from an accurate , yet controversial, point of view. He goes through all of the trying events and battles of the war, and makes multiple comrades along the way. Myers doesn't sensor anything about the war, and this just makes the book all the more intense and fascinating. The book has touched many hearts and brought knowledge to the minds of both young adults and any other person who has experienced the talent of Walter Dean Myers.

The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brian, is a fascinating, intriguing, and well written novel. This war novel is anything but the norm. It is a book filled with related but very unique experiences from the author, Tim O’Brian, and his platoon during the Vietnam War. These stories include many aspects of war. Some tell of love, some tell of death, and some tell of hate. The Things They Carried was a finalist for many prizes including the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award, and won the French Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger.
